Computer Science, a Poem

Six years ago, on campus
I spoke to two new visitors
They had a lot of things to ask
on CS in particular
four-year degrees
the college fees
the student loans
the salaries
I could have given them a pitch
instead I gave them honesty.

Six months ago, still on a call
We gave out high school scholarships
each student spoke of things they’d learn
but prices seemed so ludicrous
they’d weigh their options
make their call
their risks, rewards
and in the fall
they’d start a whole new chapter
that measured their ability
they’d make a bet on passing
but that’s responsibility.

Some things were uncertain
for them, and them like me
this endlessness, this vastness
an infinite decision tree.
Some changed paths completely
and some, they would persist
eventually, decision trees
degenerate to linked lists (*groans*)

There are still worlds to conquer
this field’s like a nation
but sometimes in the darkest times
it seems like obligation
there will be times of stressfulness
there will be some frustration
there will be times when projects die
somehow, before creation

Never let the light die
remember why you started
there’s always light to follow dark
within these things discarded.

I never use paywalls (anymore) because I would get stuck behind them.
