Sebastian Carlos Has Returned To Medium
When the world needed him the most…he returned!
Who is Sebastian Carlos?
Sebastian is a tech humor writer on Medium whose reach expanded considerably after his paywalls came down. My first introduction to him was this:
It was too sophisticated for me. This one is more my speed
He represented the Golden Age Of Medium, an epic period I made up just now to represent the peak of satire on this platform. Even ThePrimeTime covered one of his pieces.
Then he vanished for six months, and in his absence the age ended with him.
Senior Brogrammer became a serious blog. ShlinkedIn maintenance abruptly ceased. Tech content on Medium became more cynical, more robotic, and more AI-generated.
Okay, those last two points were redundant.
The Search
Who was he?
Where did he work? What did he do? I began my search with his name. All I could find was a GitHub and an elaborate network of social media handles, all of which added to the lore. A YouTube channel. Coding projects. Everything tied to the Sebastian Carlos persona, but nothing tied to his real identity.
I had a whole made-up story to add to this, but I realized that would be getting into clickbait territory. tl;dr my search went absolutely nowhere. His photo is actually just a generic photo for “programmer” that used to be on Unsplash. I found the image reused here.
The Return
And then, when I least expected it, he came back with a viral hit.
This story has everything. It touches on Meta, a company that is in the media spotlight right now for reasons I refuse to elaborate on. It also went viral, and like just about every viral article on Medium it has been met with praise and criticism. In this case, most of the criticism is by people who either did not realize it was satire, or realized it was satire and are enraged that it was satire.
Will It Continue?
We can only hope.
